Coffee origins

The fascinating
history of NESCAFÉ®

1929

A request from Brazil

To help with an enormous coffee surplus, Nestlé is asked to create a coffee that’s quick to make and reduces waste from Brazil’s harvests.

1930s

From cube to powder

A coffee tablet couldn’t keep the flavour. Chemist Max Morgenthaler went back to the drawing board and created a powder instead.

1938

The brand is born

After 7 years of development, NESCAFÉ® launches in Switzerland. The yearly reserves sell out in a mere 2 months.

1940

Every continent

NESCAFÉ® is sold in more than 30 countries around the world.

1945

A cup of care

NESCAFÉ® is added to CARE packages for populations in need across Europe and Japan.

1950s

Richer, from the bean

Flavour-protecting carbohydrates are extracted straight from the coffee bean, for a much richer product.

1962

The glass jar

The original tin is retired for the more sophisticated glass jar we know today.

1965

Enter GOLD

NESCAFÉ® GOLD is released in Europe, a new chapter of smooth, rich coffee.
